Product Launch: OralDNA Labs’ OraRisk HPV Diagnostic Test

The OraRisk HPV testing kit.

Expanding the company’s line of diagnostic tests, OralDNA Labs launched OraRisk HPV at the Chicago Dental Society’s 2010 Midwinter Meeting.

Featuring a similar testing protocol to the company’s MyPerioPath® and MyPerioID® PST®, the new test is available to screen patients for the presence of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is involved with 50% of oral cancer cases. While often thought of as a sexually transmitted disease, HPV also is present in the oropharyngeal complex and can lead to squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

The test is administered by having a patient rinse with a saline solution and then expectorate into a test tube which is sent to OralDNA Lab for analysis. DNA is extracted from the sample and polymerase chain reaction analysis is used to determine if there is HPV present in the patient’s saliva. The lab results which are available online in two to three days indicate not only whether or not HPV is present, but what type of the virus is detected and how severe an oral cancer risk is associated with that strain of HPV.

Company representatives said the test can be used to help clinicians identify patients who should be watched more closely with oral cancer screenings, as well as a way to communicate with a high-risk patient’s physician for follow-up care.
