3M ESPE: From Infant to Implant

25 03 2009

3mespelogoWhile the recurring tagline of the 3M ESPE press conference was “simply unique,” a presentation made by Dr. Roland Richter, Marketing and Operations Manger Europe and MEA, summed up one of the core messages of the day: 3M ESPE now has products to care for the tooth over a lifetime, from infant to implant. With products ranging from prevention, to composites, adhesives, impression materials, temporization, cementation, crown and bridges and yes, implants, the 3M ESPE platform made for a powerful story.

We’ll put up a separate post on the new directions they’re taking in regard to digital workflow, but in the meantime, here are some of the hot products launched regarding restorative work…

Elipar S10 LED Curing Light: This curing light features  an ergonomic stainless steel housing produced by hydroforming. The housing consists of one piece and is seamless as well as free of vents, making the device robust and durable. Since the buttons are sealed and its exterior is water resistant, internal components are kept free of contamination and cleaning of the dental curing device is simple and fast.

The curing light also is equipped with the latest LED technology allowing a high intensity of 1200 mW/cm² to assure a complete cure of the dental materials such as cements, adhesives and composites. The large 10 mm tip of the light guide facilitates easy positioning and enables the dentist to cure larger restorations. Due to 3M nanoreflector technology and a more focused design, the high light intensity of the curing light is maintained even at a distance of 7 mm between light guide and cured surface. The  design and technology  prevent the light beams from spreading and thus ensure a high intensity output leading to an improved depth of cure even in hard-to-reach clinical situations.

Additional  features icnlude a multiple-setting timer and further a tack-cure function that allows predictable curing results with reproducible, short light pulses.

Protemp 4 Temporization Material: According to the manufacturer, this temporization material is particularly well-suited for long-term temporization as well as the temporization of multiple units, because the material offers a high fracture resistance and breaking toughness. Due to its natural gloss, no polishing or glazing is required.

4Bone RCM and 4Bone SBS: RCM is a resorbable porcine skin-sourced collagen membrane for guided bone regeneration and guided tissue regeneration. It is manufactured using cross linkage technology that enables the membrane to maintain a functional barrier for 4 to 6 months. SBS is a fully synthetic bone graft compoased of HA (60%) and BTCP (40%). A permeable, interconnected micro and macro porosity promotes invasion of osteogenic celles by osteoconduction, which permits the diffusion of biological fluids, leading to fast formation of bone.

MGuide: This interactive 3D planning guide offers clinicians virtual implant planning and guided implantology. The advantages of this technology is that the transformation of digital software data into 2D and 3D images can accurately depict the real world in a virtual environment, enabling simple, accurate and safe implantology.

Other products from MIS include a Bone Compression Kit, a Multi-Unit Abutment as well as a Seven and a Mistral abutment, both of which offer a high rate of successful osseointegration.

Working in collaboration with renowned US specialist Dr. Stephen Chu, Hu-Friedy has extended its range of products for prosthetic solutions by developing a series of three gauges for measuring tooth proportions and crown length. The Chu Gauges are designed to achieve a greater degree of standardization when measuring proportions and dimensions in cosmetic restorations.
The three specially designed gauges are said to allow dentists to carry out cosmetic procedures more easily, more quickly and more predictably. According to the manufacturer, compared to past products, less time is needed during treatment for adjusting the equipment. The proportion gauge, for example, uses a  colour-coding system and is marked with a predefined scale for measuring the width-to-length ratio of the tooth. As the same gauge is used by dentists and lab technicians as a reference instrument, fewer adjustments are needed and the incidence of errors is reduced

The Symmetry IQ 4000 combines the benefits of manual scaling with the efficiency of ultrasound therapy. The latest additions to the Symmetry IQ Series are four high-grade piezo tips made of special-grade steel. Decribed as rugged and long-lasting, these tips are compatible both with the Symmetry IQ 4000 and with other systems.

“All the features of the Symmetry IQ range are designed for maximum working efficiency and easy handling for the clinician,” explains Frank Whyte, the product manager at Hu-Friedy responsible for the range. “In developing our materials and designing individual products we seek to add value at every stage of the dentist’s daily work cycle – from treatment to cleaning and care of the instruments.”

As a further development of the SycoDrill, the shortest micro motor for straight and contra-angle dental handpieces, SycoTec GmbH & Co. KG presented its new SycoSLM micro motor here at IDS. The SycoSLM is said to be an average of 50% shorter and 30% lighter than other electric dental motors and, when combined with a contra-angle handpiece, ensures balanced weight distribution and improved handling.

The new micro motor weighs just 67 grams and is 31.7 mm in length. According to the manufacturer, this makes the SycoSLM to the world’s shortest, smallest and lightest micro motor. The clear reduction in weight makes it much easier to work with straight and contra-angle handpieces. For female dentists in particular, the lower weight results in less strain on muscles in the fingers, making it possible to work in much more relaxed, pleasant and, ultimately, precise way. The even distribution of weight between the contra-angle handpiece, electric motor and hose ensures that the system is well balanced and feels good in the dentist’s hand. An integrated LED light with a significantly longer lifetime compared to previous high-pressure lamps provides improved lighting during treatment.

The SycoSLM is designed for integrated media delivery of spray air, spray water and cooling air for the motor, and incorporates a non-return valve for spray water to prevent back-contamination. As a preparation motor, the rotational speed range of the micro motor lies between 1,000 and 40,000 rpm with a torque of 3 Ncm. Even in connection with straight and contra-angle handpieces, SycoSLM operates free of vibrations and, above all, inaudibly. The instrument coupling corresponds to the ISO standard and is suitable for all straight and contra-angle handpieces.
